Google for absolute beginners

As the saying goes: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Here is a tool for all those people that find it more convenient to bother you with their question rather than google it for themselves.

Your friend asks you a question he could just as easily have found an answer to in Google, e.g. “what is the size of the web?”. Don’t let it ruin your mood! This is a simple and convenient (and fun) tool that will teach him to search and provide him with a lifetime of knowledge:

Type the question into the search box at Let me google that for you. In return you receive a URL that you can send to your inquisitive friend. This URL leads to a page that by a simple animation shows how to type the question into the search box and click the Search button. Before being transported to the search results, the following message is displayed: Was that so hard?

The service is not associated with Google in any way.

Google Earth goes to Ancient Rome

Ancient Rome as seen by GoogleAnyone who has followed the current TV adventure/soap opera Rome, knows that modern technology may bring the world of antiquity back to life.

Google is now doing its part, by adding an Ancient Rome module (”layer”) to Google Earth, its free software package for exploring the surface of the Earth.

According to Wired the The Ancient Rome 3D feature was created in conjunction with the Rome Reborn Project 2.0 at University of Virginia’s Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities.

The image below is taken from the Rome Reborn project’s web site, while the image above is from Google Earth.

Needless to say the resolution of the images is much better in the original software, but Google’s version is more than acceptable.

Rome according to the Rome Reborn project

The original digital model reflects the sources of the present knowledge about ancient Rome, including archaeological data about specific sites and features (”class 1″) and quantitative data about the distribution of building types throughout the fourteen regions of the city (”class 2″).

So far, the Rome Reborn Project has modeled 32 buildings and monuments of the ca. 200 available in class 1.

Here is Google’s own video on the 3D presentation of the capital of the Roman Empire anno 320 AD:

Google Flu Trends

Google Flu Trends, based on Internet search activity, predicts new outbreaks of flu in the US.

Man in the coldIt is that time of the year here on the Northern Hemisphere.

A steady stream of new mutated flu viruses reach Europe and Northern America from Asia, leading to sore throats, runny noses and feverish days and nights, and there seems to be nothing we can do about it.

Normally you would look to the medical field for a solution (there is not one yet), but now Google wants to use web search to help out.

New Scientist reports that Google Flu Trends, created by the company’s philanthropic arm, Google.org, provides daily estimates of the number of flu cases in the US.

Google uses its database of internet search queries to do this. In short Google counts the number of queries related to flu symptoms and look for changes in the number of such searches. A surge in searches indicates that there is a new outbreak.

Google can detect an outbreak days before it shows up in the weekly statistical reports compiled by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Needless to say, this information cannot stop an outbreak, but the hospital may be better prepared for the next wave of flu patients.

Google.org is working on similar web search trend statistics for other diseases.

Below is a figure that shows the correlation between searches (flu) and CDC data.

World of Goo ofiarą piractwa

World of Goo to naprawdę ciekawa produkcja a przy tym jedna z najlepiej ocenianych gier w historii. 2D Boy zdecydowało się wydać grę bez żadnych zabezpieczeń, niestety nie skończyło się to dla firmy zbyt dobrze…

Ron Carmel 2D Boy twierdzi, że kiedy ostatni raz sprawdzano odsetek pirackich kopii World of Goo wynosił on blisko 90%. Carmel przeglądał nawet strony z torrentami, gdzie znalazł 500 seedeów i bliko 300 “pijawek”.
